Shoalhaven NSW in-home stroke service

A specialist in-home program and group therapy service for people who have suffered a stroke has been launched in the Shoalhaven region of New South Wales (NSW).

NSW Health Minister, John Della Bosca, said a specialist team will provide in-home rehabilitation services including occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech pathology to compliment the patient’s hospital care and rehabilitation.

“Through the Government’s Caring Together Health Action Plan, more people with chronic and complex conditions will receive home-based care.

“Supporting and treating people in their home will take pressure off the hard-working and dedicated doctors and nurses in our busy emergency departments while ensuring people continue to get the care they need in an appropriate and comfortable setting”.

Stroke patients will now also have access to individual and group therapy stroke services at Milton Ulladulla Hospital, Sussex Inlet Community Health Centre and St Georges Basin Community Health Centre.

“These enhancements have been made possible by more than $170,000 in recurrent funding from the NSW government,” the Minister said.

“They further build on the dedicated stroke service established last year at Shoalhaven Hospital – one of seven opened in regional NSW as part of our Rural Stroke Project. More than 53,000 strokes occur in Australia each year – that’s one every 10 minutes, it’s our second largest killer and one of the leading causes of disability among adults.

“This funding will enable stroke patients in the Shoalhaven to achieve the best possible outcomes following stroke and provides continued specialist local care and support,” said Mr Della Bosca.
