Shane is an ‘everyday hero’

New South Wales Anglican Care’s Carey Bay Village care assistant, Shane Johannessen, was named as Trainee of the Year at Hunter Aged Care Achievement Awards last Wednesday.

The awards recognise ‘everyday heroes’ working in the aged care industry in the New South Wales’ Hunter region.

It provides an opportunity for the community, families, aged care workers and organisations to recognise and nominate staff, and volunteers, who stand out in their commitment to providing excellence in aged care.

With a background in armed forces, truck driving and as a chainsaw salesperson, 41-year-old Mr Jonannessen (pictured) made what many may say was a significant career change. He, however, didn’t see the change as so extreme.

“I’ve always enjoyed helping people and, until now, I’ve never really been in a job where I have been able to do that,” he said.

Mr Johannessen began a Bachelor of Nursing at Newcastle University and – looking for opportunities to gain experience in the industry – then enrolled in a traineeship in Certificate III in Aged Care at Anglican Care’s Carey Bay Village.

After achieving competency in all units, he received his qualification in June.

Highly regarded by his peers, the residents and their families, Mr Johannessen is passionate and dedicated to his role as care assistant, and committed to providing excellent care and a quality lifestyle to Anglican Care residents.

Colin Osborne, Anglican Care chief executive, said: “Although Shane comes from a background very different to the aged care industry, his compassion, trustworthiness and kindness have seen him flourish at Anglican Care in his newly chosen career.

“Employees like Shane, and those nominated along with him, are the fabric of Anglican Care and allow us to maintain our highly regarded reputation within the aged care sector.”

Anglican Care was strongly represented across all categories of the Hunter Aged Care Awards, with five of the 31 finalists from Anglican Care facilities and services.

Other Anglican Care finalists included: Maureen McLennan (Anglican Care McIntosh Hostel) Aged Care, Care Staff of the Year Award (Residential); Louise Howell (Anglican Care Carey Bay Village), Aged Care Registered Nurse of the Year Award; Helen Pullen (Anglican Care Jesmond Grove Hostel), Aged Care Support Staff of the Year Award; and John Kilpatrick (Anglican Care Chairman), Aged Care Volunteer of the Year Award.
