Seniors’ susceptibility to fraud
Changes in the brain caused by age can make some people more susceptible to fraud. Reuters reported that these changes, which affect judgment and decision making, can make seniors more vulnerable to deception.
The University of Iowa researchers said their study suggested that older people who fall prey to fraud are not simply gullible or less intelligent; instead, this vulnerability has a medical, neurological cause.
Researchers studied 80 healthy seniors with no apparent neurological problems to see how they made decisions.
People who had trouble making decisions also had trouble identifying misleading advertisements and experienced sweating while making a decision.
