Seniors and sleep
Older women with sleep-disordered breathing (the restriction or interruption of breathing during sleep) are more likely to show cognitive impairment than other women.
Researchers at the University of California in San Francisco said the association was even stronger in women with at least one copy of a gene called APOE e4, which is considered a risk factor for Alzheimer’s as well as sleep-disordered breathing, including apnoea.
Researchers found this link in women with an average age of 82.8 years and said the phenomenon needed to be studied in men.
