The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports older pets can be “good companions, especially for a person living alone”.
According to experts, adopting a dog “well beyond” the puppy years gives owners a better sense of the personality and temperament of the pet, and while older pets may not have the longevity of younger pets, it can be “satisfying” to take care of a mature pet as they age.
However, senior pet owners have been warned they must consider the potentially high cost of caring for an older pet; which may include regular wellness checks, and keeping up-to-date with vaccinations and preventative health screenings.
