SA public advocate resigns
Public advocate, John Harley, has told the South Australian government he is resigning a year before the end of his term, for health reasons.
A barrister and solicitor, Mr Harley has been the public advocate since 1999, appointed to act in the best interests of the mentally incapacitated.
He is well known for speaking out on aged care issues and the mental health effects of long-term immigration detention.
Mr Harley has also criticised the state government’s plan to close the mental health facility James Nash House in Adelaide and replace it with a new centre near Murray Bridge, south-east of the city.
Mr Harley is expected to leave the job this month (January).
