SA enrolled nurse to work without supervision
A South Australian woman is the first enrolled nurse in South Australia to earn the right to work without the supervision of a registered nurse.
It has taken Louise Dearman, 38, from Charleston in the Adelaide Hills, two years of training and meeting goals set by the Nurses Board of South Australia to achieve the honour.
Under the state Nurses Act 1999, enrolled nurses must practice under the supervision of a registered nurse. However, a subsection within the act allows an enrolled nurse to apply for permission to practice without a registered nurse.
Chief executive officer of the Nurses Board of South Australia, Alyson Smith, said Ms Dearman proved her competency to the board in several areas and satisfied the criteria.
Among other things, Ms Dearman will now be able to visit the homes of the elderly for health assessments.
