Senator Jacinta Collins has been announced as the new Mental Health and Ageing Minister, replacing Mark Butler, who now becomes Minister for Climate Change, Environment, Water and Heritage.
Senator Collins’ appointment was made as Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced his new ministry cabinet in Newcastle this morning.
Senator Collins (pictured) was appointed to the Senate to fill a casual vacancy caused by the death of Senator Olive Zakharov. She was parliamentary secretary to the shadow minister for industrial relations and employment, training and population from October 1998 to November 2001. She was the shadow minister for children and youth from July 2003 to October 2004.
On 26 June 2013, she was elected deputy leader of the government and the ALP in the Senate replacing Senator Penny Wong who was elevated to Senate leader.

Mr Rudd’s new team will be sworn in by the governor general at 2pm (AEST) today and will hold their first cabinet meeting two hours later.
