Royal Life Saving Tas launches ‘Grey Medallion’ for older Australians to be aquatic active

Royal Life Saving Tasmania believes it is important for older Australians to reacquaint themselves with the water and it has launched a new program the ‘Grey Medallion’.

It has developed The Grey Medallion program specifically targeting the over 55’s with four components:

1. Active Older Aquatic Lifestyle Day
2. An in-water aquatic exercise program
3. An aquatic safety program for the over 55 year old
4. An awareness campaign to reduce drowning deaths and promote aquatic recreation

Royal Life Saving Tasmania believes that everyone can be a lifesaver, and as the baby boomer generation reaches retirement age many of them are taking up activities that they did not previously have time for and are therefore at greater risk.

This generation may be responsible for the care of grandchildren or other minors, so it is crucial that they be fully aware of the potential dangers surrounding different ‘bodies’ of water and, in the event of an emergency, be proficient in the delivery of resuscitation.

“Not only will the program provide the over 55’s an opportunity to exercise, stay fit and have fun but as the figures show, nearly 30% of drowning deaths in Tasmania occurred in this age group, so obviously we need to provide appropriate education and raise awareness as to the importance of water safety and resuscitation,” said Jamie McIntrye, Royal Life Saving Tasmania project officer.
