Revamped website a ‘therapeutic’ blessing
Older Australians and their carers will have greater access and knowledge of how prescription, over the counter and complementary medicines and medical devices are regulated.
The revamped Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) website was launched yesterday (Wednesday 4 May 2011), and is considered one of the most respected medicine regulators in the world.
“But for too long its assessment processes have been too inaccessible to the public,” Parliamentary secretary for health and ageing, Catherine King said.
The website has been completely redesigned and rebuilt, with improved navigation and organisation of content to ensure all audience groups will find it easier to access the information they need.
Ms King said the TGA has conducted extensive external consultation and testing and the revamped site reflects a growing commitment to making important information about therapeutic goods more widely available.
“In November last year I announced a comprehensive review of the way in which the TGA communicates its regulatory processes and decisions. The review is focusing on improving the TGA’s transparency,” Ms King said.
“The purpose of the review is to improve public knowledge of regulatory decision-making and to improve public understanding of the benefits and risks of therapeutic goods,” she said.
“I expect that the redesigned TGA website will be welcomed by consumers, health professionals and industry.”
Increasing the use of email alerts and improving search functionalities will also be improved throughout the year.
