Retirement plan for those with intellectual disabilities

Posted
by DPS

A team from the Queensland University of Technology and Red Cross has developed a retirement planning framework to help older employees with intellectual disabilities to make a successful transition to retirement.

The practical framework called Moving On, aims to improve understanding of issues surrounding retirement planning for people with an intellectual disability who are employed in supported employment settings such as Red Cross Business Services.

It involves a four-step process which begins by getting older workers to think about what they are currently doing and what they would like to do.

The process ends with the development of a monitoring and review system to ensure that quality of life continues for the older supported employee when he or she retires.

The framework recognises issues such as the nature of support required at home, maintaining a network of friends, financial wellbeing and having a sense of purpose and social participation.
