Retirement for horses in Vic

Out to pasture
A new retirement development in Victoria is being planned – for horses. Strict assessment, entry and care provisions apply – they must be successful race winners.
The proposed super stable – Living Legends – the International Home of Rest for Champion Horses – is located in the grounds of Woodlands Park at Greendale, near Melbourne Airport.
It opens to the public – and horses- in time for this year’s Spring Racing Carnival. Entry will be free.
Among the residents will be Melbourne Cup legends Might and Power, Saintly, Doriemus and Rogan Josh. Cox Plate and Japan Cup winner Better Loosen Up will also be a resident, along with Caulfield Cup winners Paris Lane and Sky Heights.
Talks are under way for Northerly, Super Impose, Elegant Fashion and Dandy Kid to take up residence, and Fields of Omagh, who will go around in this year’s Cox Plate, has booked a spot for retirement.
Just with other elderly folk, management will have to see who gets on with who before allocating paddocks. Might and Power and Doriemus lashed out at each other in last year’s Melbourne Cup Parade.
The horses will be protected by a 24 hour security service and live-in carers.
