Restrict calories to increase life expectancy

A nutritious but calorie restricted diet can increase life expectancy and reduce the risk of age related diseases including cancer according to research just published in the international journal, Science.

The diet, tested over 20 years on monkeys, has normal healthy ingredients but 30% fewer calories, slows the ageing process and reduced the risk of developing age related diseases, such as cancer, heart or brain disease by a factor of three.

It completely prevented diabetes.

The researchers are looking for drugs that might mimic the effects of caloric restriction, conferring the gain without the pain. One of these is resveratrol, a substance found in red wine, although in quantities too small to have any effect.
