Respite care facility sought for Pilbara region
A northwest Western Australian respite care provider says the region has no overnight care facilities.
Pilbara and Kimberley Care ran a day and night respite service in Port Hedland for the elderly, disabled and homeless, out of two homes donated by BHP.
However, BHP has taken back one of the houses to provide housing for workers.
The coordinator of the respite service, Diana Herbert, says it has had to cut back the service.
“We have a day care centre here for everyone, but a respite centre for us for an overnight stay we no longer have, there’s no respite in South or Port Hedland for anybody now,” she said.
A BHP spokesman says the second house was only made available for a limited time and the service was aware of that.
