Rehabilitation Appliances Program

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) has announced changes to the Rehabilitation Appliances Program (RAP).

DVA will no longer retrieve equipment if the veteran or war widow continues to have a need for the equipment after they enter a residential aged care home and the aged care provider is satisfied the equipment does not pose a health and safety hazard to staff and other residents. Where DVA allows the veteran to retain the item, DVA will also repair and maintain it.

This change does not alter aged care providers’ responsibilities to continue to provide the specified care and services as set down in Quality of Care Principles.

Consumable RAP items, such as continence aids, are not included in the changes.

Oxygen therapy is also excluded. These will continue to be provided by the aged care home according to clinical need.
