Reducing LGBTI barriers in aged care

Victorian aged care provider, Lifeview Residential Care (Lifeview), has taken further steps to ensure all of its residents are able to age with grace, choice and without fear of discrimination.

Lifeview celebrated International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) in each of its homes and corporate office yesterday to show their support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) community.

Lifeview residents and staff embraced the day by dressing in purple and rainbows and creating colourful artworks representing inclusiveness.

Staff and residents have also taken the step to sign individual pledges in support of the LGBTI community, and placed these around the homes and offices.

“We firmly believe our homes should be inclusive for all and that everyone is able to age with grace, dignity, and choice and without fear of discrimination.”

The provider is on track to achieving the ‘Rainbow Tick’ accreditation, which consists of six standards against which services can be formally accredited to demonstrate LGBTI inclusive practice and service delivery.

“This accreditation will assist us to better care for elders from all walks of life – it’s all about reducing barriers,” Ms Gall says.

Lifeview recently announced its intention to build a LGBTI aged care living and retirement home in Melbourne’s inner city suburb of Prahran.

The development has been described as the first inner city offering this type of facility in Melbourne by an approved aged care provider.
