Redback spider plague sparks evacuation of Qld nursing home
More than 40 elderly Charleville residents are being moved from their rooms at the Waroona Aged Care Centre after a redback spider infestation, reports the Courier Mail newspaper.
Patients are being moved in groups while fumigaters inspect and treat the centre.
Some are being transferred to the Charleville Hospital, which is on the same campus as the centre, while others will move to other rooms within the aged care facility.
Queensland Health’s southwest district chief executive officer, Maree Geraghty, said depending on the extent of the infestation, the aged care centre may require a full evacuation.
But she said: “There is no need for alarm. I want to assure residents and their families that the safety of our patients and staff will remain paramount at all times.”
