Reaching crisis point
Do you have the urge to jump from a plane or perhaps you have started to pay more attention to the reflection in the mirror? Some may say these emotions are ‘normal’, while others likely believe this behaviour could be the early warning signs of a midlife crisis.

A person can experience a midlife crisis between the ages of 40 and 60 years, and although at the time it can feel like a daunting stage in your life, experts insist a midlife crisis is a “normal” part of ageing.
While many people experiencing the emotions associated with a midlife crisis tend to eventually see the light at the end of a very dark tunnel; for others it can be an uncomfortable time which can lead to depression.
The typical emotions a person may experience during a midlife crisis are boredom, unhappiness with life, a need for adventure and change, questioning the choices they have made in life, anger at their spouse and clouded thoughts and indecision.
A new report by British health insurance firm, Bupa, alleges Britain is the most “unhealthiest and miserable” country, with middle-aged Britons suffering from midlife crises in their 40s to early 50s.
Nearly half of Britons are shown as depressed about their finances, 30% are fed up with their career and 21% think life in general “stinks”.
In comparison, 73% of Mexicans are happy with life and 55% with their careers. Also upbeat about life are Brazilians who are known to have a stronger emphasis on social life and prioritise family and friends.
Averting a crisis can be difficult – look out for the warning signs:
- Experts claim a change in a person’s job status may be the primary indicator that a crisis is on its way.
- A dangerous desire to carry out suspense-filled activities.
- An obsession with physical appearance and the need to feel and look youthful with excessive grooming and exercise taking priority.
