Queenslanders harness unparalleled NDIS opportunities

SPONSORED STORY: As the number of Queenslanders accessing disability care is set to more than double over the next three years, a Brisbane based care provider is bringing together influential industry experts to lead a discussion on the challenges and opportunities facing the sector.

Carers Link will launch a free discussion platform, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Expo and Forum, on 3 June, to give community members the unprecedented ability to access industry insiders, many of whom have been instrumental in the scheme’s state development.

Carers Link director, Deborah Brennan, says the NDIS has the ability to transform people’s lives, however as an incredibly complex framework, it will take a high level of communication in order to get the best results.

“Instigating the drastic change from block funding to individual contracts has never even been attempted before, so we need to lay the groundwork now in order to get things right in Queensland,” Ms Brennan says.

The number of people receiving disability care in Queensland is set to rise from 45,000 to 97,000 by the time the NDIS reaches full implementation on 1 July 2019.

Carers Link is a quality service provider offering personalised care for individuals of all ages living with a disability, frail older people and carers.

“We want to give every single Queenslander affected by a disability the opportunity to get together with those-in-the-know, as well as each other, in order to harness the incredible opportunities that are heading our way,” she says.

Fiona Anderson, National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) assistant director engagement and implementation, will be on hand to answer questions, alongside Member for Aspley and former Minister for Disabilities, Tracy Davis.

“When the NDIS rolls out, the disability market will be contestable and consumer driven, meaning there will be more options and more choice for the scheme participants,” Ms Davis says.

“To cater for the increased demand, the disability support workforce is anticipated to double, increasing by 13,000,” she says.

“I hope that the forum attendees come away with a greater understanding of what the scheme will mean for them as we move towards the planned transition from 2016.”

The funding model is set to transform the way the 18% of Queenslanders with a disability are able to access their supports, as well as how these supports are funded and delivered.

The Carers Link NDIS Expo and Forum, supported by sponsors including Open Minds, Q-Psych and Carthills, will be held on 3 June at the Kedron Wavell Services Club, beginning at 10am. To register for this free event, contact Carers Link or phone (07) 3901 1165.
