Queensland Department releases new version of ‘Ageing: Myths and Realities’
As part of ‘Seniors Week’, the Department of Communities has updated the publication ‘Ageing: Myths and Realities’ to challenge some of the myths about ageing and old age.
It provides factual evidence that old age does not mean withdrawal from all physical, mental, social and community activity.
For example, the booklet talks about the perception that all older people are unwell or disabled; and points out that 68% of those aged 65 and over rate their health as either excellent, very good or good.
Similarly, despite lurid media reports that engender fear of crime and a sense of unease, people aged 65 and over are less likely to be victims of crime than other adults.
The booklet should soon be available on-line – check at http://www.communities.qld.gov.au
