Qld Seniors Week 14-22 August

Posted
by DPS

Community organisations across the state will hold events to celebrate the valuable achievements and contributions of Queensland seniors during Queensland Seniors Week 2010.

An online calendar of Seniors Week activities is available for community members to find local events to join in.

The Queensland Government supports Seniors Week celebrations in order to promote positive attitudes towards older people and ageing, encourage older people to lead active lifestyles, and to foster inter-generational relationships.

Healthy ageing will also be promoted to Brisbane’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community on 17 August, as part of an inaugural expo held during Seniors Week.

The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Ageing Well Expo aims to increase awareness about aged care services and improve access to health providers for Indigenous people and their carers.

Blue Care Indigenous coordinator, David Conlon, an event organiser, said the expo will feature interactive displays, health education sessions, demonstrations, healthy food sampling and bush tucker, as well as entertainment by traditional dancers and live bands.

The event, which will feature more than 30 exhibitors and presenters, has been made possible thanks to Queensland Health, Logan City Council, Blue Care and the World Indigenous Cultural Exchange & Economic Development Organisation (WICEEDO).

“This Brisbane-first expo is a step to improving the health care and life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in our community,” Mr Conlon said.

“There is a huge gap in the life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people when compared with other Australians and consequently our people are requiring aged care services at a much earlier age.”

He encourages people aged from 40 years old to attend the expo, in addition to elders.

Entry is free to the expo held at Kingston Butter Factory, Kingston, from 9.30am-2.30pm on 17 August.
