Acting Queensland Premier, Paul Lucas, has blamed the state’s lengthy specialist waiting list on Queensland’s ageing population and soaring demand.
But a major doctors’ group says the state’s hospital system must be expanded if there is to be any waiting list reduction.
The Courier Mail has reported that Queensland patients were waiting up to five years to see medical specialists before being put on the state’s long waiting list for surgery. Nearly 200,000 people waited for an appointment with a specialist in 2010.
Patients faced even further delays, with another 32,105 people added to the official elective surgery waiting list in January this year.
