Push for aged care sector boost in Darling Downs Qld region

One of the members of a project team developing strategies to attract more workers to the aged care sector, says it is an issue of particular importance to the Darling Downs in southern Queensland.

The Aged Care Skills Formation Strategy project is made up of representatives from the state Department of Education, Training and the Arts, the aged care sector, unions and Toowoomba Regional Council.

The project team met for the first time in Toowoomba on 27 October.

Project officer, Jennie Peut, say the aged care industry suffers from a poor image within the community generally, as well as having lower salaries compared to other health sectors.

She says Toowoomba Council wanted to be part of the project, because the region has a number of large aged care facilities and community based aged care services.

“All of them are struggling to find the right people for the jobs, and then being able to hang on to those for the jobs,” Ms Peut said.
