CSIRO scientists have unlocked the secrets of a protein that could lead to life-saving cancer and diabetes research.
The microscopic protein is called an insulin receptor and is found on the surface of cells. It is essential in regulating the level of sugar uptake in cells.
The researchers discovered the 3D structure of the insulin receptor by isolating cells and crystallising them. The crystals were then X-rayed to reveal the molecular formation of the protein.
Researchers hope the breakthrough might lead to developments in cancer and diabetes treatment.
