Older men with prostate problems may experience incontinence, but it can be managed.

One of the leaders in continence protection, Queensland-based Lille Healthcare, specialises in personal and homecare continence management with a range of quality pads and pants – including its male-specific continence aids.

Managing light to moderate urinary incontinence in males, Lille Healthcare’s Suprem for Men small-shaped pad is designed to enhance comfort and security.

Fluid is said to pass quickly through the non-woven top sheet and into the absorbent core which contains absorbent ‘polymers’ that optimise absorbency levels and controls odours.

Queensland-based continence nurse advisor, Michelle Kalms, tells DPS eNews, prostate cancer in men is “very high” in Australia, and says one of many treatment options available is a radical prostatectomy.

“However, one of the complications of this surgery can include incontinence,” she explains.

According to Ms Kalms, there are different types of incontinence which varies from person to person, but the main types experienced by many of the men usually are both stress and ‘urge incontinence’ (mixed incontinence) as a result of the radical prostatectomy surgery.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia says prostate disorders can have similar symptoms, which may include frequently urinating at night, the sudden urge to urinate, difficulty or discomfort in starting to urinate, or the slow flow of urine and difficulty in stopping.

The Continence Foundation of Australia also confirms problems with bladder control can follow prostate surgery.

About 2.7 million men are affected by incontinence in Australia, however Lille Healthcare says it is difficult to accurately estimate the number as it is an “under-reported condition”.
