Property Council of Australia supports SA Govt involvement in affordable housing developments

The South Australian Government’s push to incorporate a proportion of affordable housing in all significant new residential property developments has been supported by the Property Council of Australia (PCA).

But the Council’s SA executive director, Nathan Paine, said the Government needed to do more work on other issues affecting housing costs.

Mr Paine said legislation seeking to earmark 15% of new developments of more than 20 housing sites for lower-cost housing addressed a key area in the property market.

The PCA recognised that the supply of affordable housing was an increasing problem, not just in SA but across the country.

Other issues involved in higher housing costs, included supply and state property taxes such as stamp duty and council levies. In addition, there were different levels of affordable housing – for the vulnerable, low-income earners and “aspirational” home owners. These were issues that needed to be considered.
