Private health insurance on rise
Figures released by the Private Health Insurance Administration Council show more than 8.8 million Australians (43%), have private health insurance (PHI) cover. An additional 16,584 (0.2%) people took out PHI in the June 2006 quarter, making it the fourth consecutive quarter where coverage has increased. The number of people with Ancillary cover increased by 0.5%. This means that approximately 50% of the Australian population is covered by some form of private health insurance.
