Prime Minister focuses on ‘sandwich’ baby boomers
The Prime Minister John Howard made special mention of the ‘sandwich
generation’ of baby boomers – those who are caught between ageing parents and young offspring.
In the first of a series of keynote addresses – this one in Brisbane
yesterday entitled ‘Australia Rising’, the Prime Minister said the
sandwich generation was the direct result of the ageing of Australia’s
population.
“More and more baby boomer women in particular carry heavy
responsibilities around caring for ageing parents and for children still
at home, while also holding down a job in the paid workforce,” he said.
He said child care and flexibility in the workplace were two areas where the government could help this group.
Mr Howard hinted at releasing further policies to help the sandwich
generation. “I suspect there will be some other things as well. I
haven’t made reference to that sandwich generation lightly.”
