PM to put nurse training back in hospitals
The Prime Minister plans to set up an alternative form of nurse training in hospitals rather than universities.
His plan aims to train an extra 500 nurses a year in nursing schools built by the Commonwealth but run by community groups working with employers.
Nurses will graduate in three years with a nationally recognised TAFE qualification equivalent to university based study.
While the plan is expected to be welcomed by doctors, the Australian Nursing Federation will oppose the plan strongly, as it is a step away from the university degree in nursing currently offered.
