Petition to get dementia on G20 agenda
Alzheimer’s Australia is supporting a petition to Prime Minister Tony Abbott to place dementia prominently on the G20 agenda. The organisation is urging the Prime Minister to build on the action taken at the recent G8 Dementia Summit, which set the stage for a global fight against dementia.
The outcomes of the G8 Dementia Summit are in its summit communiqué and summit declaration.
Australia’s own Asia Pacific region will have the major share of the world’s population of people with dementia, with numbers estimated to reach 135 million by 2050.
Dementia is set to have a global economic impact – the current worldwide cost of dementia care is over US$600 billion, or around 1% of global GDP.
If dementia care were a country, it would rank as the world’s 18th largest economy.
A commitment from the G20 leaders is likely to have a profound impact with respect to investing in dementia research, promoting riskreduction strategies and identifying treatments that can alter the course of the disease and determine future health and social care costs.
The goal is to obtain 20,000 signatures for the petition.
