Peptic ulcer treatment approved
A new indication for Nexium has been approved, for the prevention of peptic ulcer re-bleeding in adults – making it the first and only proton pump inhibitor (PPI) in the country to receive TGA approval for this indication.
The indication comes after a large international study found that the addition of intravenous Nexium (Nexium i.v.) after endoscopic treatment of a peptic ulcer bleed, reduced re-bleeding in patients by 43% within 72 hours, compared with the placebo.
Professor Neville Yeomans, Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Western Sydney, has stated that the new approval for Nexium means “the risk of patients having their hospitalisation prolonged and an increased chance of dying due to a peptic ulcer re-bleed, may be reduced”.
