The more licensed premises in an area, the higher the risk of nearby residents encountering drink-related problems, including property damage, according to the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.
The director of the Bureau, Dr Don Weatherburn said the findings posed a problem for national competition policy which has seen attempts to restrict the number of liquor licenses as anti competitive.
“This study, however, strongly suggests that placing limits on the number of licensed premises in a given area may be one very effective way of limiting problems associated with drunkenness and property damage,” he said.
