Parents ‘blackmail’ grandparents into caring for grandchildren

The President of Older People Speaking Out (OPSO), a Queensland based advocacy group, has accused children of baby boomers putting pressure – even blackmailing – their parents to take responsibility for their grandchildren while the children work to pay off their mortgage and maintain their lifestyle.

The grandparents feel put-upon and agree reluctantly to take care of infants and toddlers so as not to alienate their children.

” It has changed the concept of being a grandmother, with the accompanying comforts and non judgemental qualities, into the role of being the primary carer, with very little ‘me’ time,” Val French, OPSO President said.

A spokeswoman for the Council of Grandparents, which meets with relevant government groups to discuss the role of grandparents and their rights, say older women are becoming distressed with the twin burden of caring for grandchildren on a regular basis alongside newly retired husbands who are at a loss to entertain themselves
