Opening of disability office in Victoria

The new Victorian Coalition for Disability Rights said the proposed Office for Disability announced recently by the Victorian Government must now be complemented by substantial investment to overcome the crisis in disability services.

The newly-formed Coalition for Disability Rights (CDR) brings together people with disabilities, families, carers, advocacy organisations, peak bodies and disability support providers.

CDR said that Labor and the other political parties contesting the election needed to tell the community how they would assist families desperately needing accommodation, day services, respite care and vital equipment.

It called for a more co-ordinated approach across Government to make life better for people with disabilities, matched by a genuine commitment to assist the almost 4,500 Victorians on the waiting list for disability services.

The Coalition plans to campaign in marginal seats between now and the election to make sure people in the community are aware of the state of disability services and to ensure that politicians provide solutions to this crisis.
