Online publication of passenger lists helps genealogists

Australians whose ancestors emigrated from Britain by ship will be able to more easily trace their family tree with the new online publication of passenger lists for the 1890-1899 period by Britain’s National Archives and the ancestral records site, findmypast.com.

Over the next six months the digitised passenger lists at www.ancestorsonboard.com will expand to include the years up to 1960, covering 30 million Britons.

It took a team of 125 full time workers to digitise the 1.5million pages of original documents, which include the pre-World War 1 emigration period between 1890 and 1914 when each year 25,000 left Britain for Australia.
