Older Women Ageing Safely in NSW forum

Posted
by DPS

The Older Women’s Network New South Wales (OWN NSW) is holding a forum on the topic, Older Women Ageing Safely in NSW, to look at the outcomes of OWN NSW research into the increased reporting of violence perpetrated against older women.

Two years ago, OWN NSW held a forum titled Age Gives No Immunity to Violence.

This led to a series of projects to research and map what we know about violence and older women (described in the report ‘The Disappearing Age’); to engage General Practitioners and a range of sectors in a collaborative approach to identify and support older women being abused in their homes; and to research the experience of older homeless women.

The 2010 event will provide an opportunity to report and reflect on progress achieved, as well as barriers encountered.

The forum will be addressed by Carmel Tebbutt, Deputy Premier and Minister for Health, and Jodi McKay, Minister for Women.

Speakers include Bridget Penhale, Reader in Gerontology, University of Sheffield, specialists in the field and the voices of older women.

The event is endorsed by Homelessness NSW, TARS (Aged-care Rights Service), The Benevolent Society and The NSW Council of Social Services.

It will be held on Thursday 29 April 2010, 9am – 4pm, at Petersham Town Hall, 107 Crystal Street (nearest cross street Frederick St) Petersham.
