Older women find daily living easier than men regardless of their relationship status, an international Ageing Conference in Melbourne has been told.
The Herald Sun reports psychologist, Deidre McLaughlin, says women function better than men because performing basic tasks had become “habitual” from running a household.
Explaining that women do not need as much assistance, Dr McLaughlin says they have looked at “mortality but not mobility”.
“It was very interesting, it doesn’t matter if a woman has a husband or not. It seems older men have higher expectations of themselves,” she says.
Widowed men reportedly struggle more as many men often rely on females, whereas 99% of widowed women can often “look after themselves”.
The conference which was held recently attracted experts from around the world as they examined why the elderly prefer strip shops over large centres and looked at ageing issues such as why women today are less healthy than those born in the 1920s often because of the increase in obesity and smoking rates.
