Nursing students achieve their ‘best 10’
Sitting at a computer for hours studying may not be the best preparation for running your best 10 kilometres time at the Launceston Ten this month but a collaboration between the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the School of Human Life Sciences is attempting to address this problem.
Sitting at a computer for hours studying may not be the best preparation for running your best 10 kilometres time at the Launceston Ten this month but a collaboration between the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the School of Human Life Sciences is attempting to address this problem.
A group of first year nursing students has teamed up with final year exercise science students who are dragging them away from their computers three times a week to train for the upcoming Launceston Ten footrace.
“This is a great opportunity for our final year exercise science students to apply the skills they have learnt throughout their degree and at the same time help to inform future nurses about the benefits of regular exercise and the role that university trained exercise professionals can play,” Dr James Fell, Bachelor of Exercise Science course coordinator, said.
“We have had a committed group of nursing students coming along to training for seven weeks under the guidance of our final year exercise science students and the improvements we have seen are fantastic.
“We know that regular exercise is beneficial for cognitive function so we are confident this small break in study will actually be beneficial for the students involved,” Dr Fell said.
“We’re also hoping that the nursing students will draw on this experience when they are working with people in relation to lifestyle and behaviour change,” added Dr Shandell Elmer, senior lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
There will also be up to 12 UTAS staff members running the 10km and anyone interested in joining the fitness regime is welcome to take part in training sessions at 1pm on Mondays, 11am on Tuesdays and Wednesdays on the UTAS Newnham oval.
The Launceston Ten is a 10km and 2km race in Launceston, Tasmania. The 10km has reportedly been Australia’s fastest 10km road race for the past five years. Find out more about the Launceston Ten.
