Nursing – making a difference every day
Tomorrow is International Nurses Day and aged care provider, UnitingCare Ageing, is calling on all nurses or potential nurses to pursue their vocation in the aged care sector.
Gillian McFee, UnitingCare Ageing director, says that nursing in aged care is a chance to enhance the quality of life of older people. As the clinical needs of older people increase, aged care nurses have wonderful opportunities to develop their clinical assessment and case management skills.
“We are so lucky to have wonderful, compassionate nurses to care for the people we serve.
“Nursing is absolutely vital and without the dedication of our nurses there would be many older Australians struggling to achieve well-being and a level of independence,” Ms McFee explains.
Narelle has been a nurse for 21 years, 11 of those with UnitingCare Ageing. She admits to relishing the opportunity to learn pearls of wisdom from the people she cares for.
“I love their stories on life. It gives me great pleasure to meet the needs of a client and see them smile and know that I’ve had the pleasure of being part of their day,” she said.
The aged care sector is one of the largest employers of nurses in Australia. Caring for over 14,000 people every single day.
“Nursing is highly valued, particularly by our clients and residents who deserve the right to age with dignity and respect in their later years,” said Ms McFee.
International Nurses Day is Wednesday 12 May 2010. The annual event recognises the contribution and devotion of the nursing profession to the health and well-being of vulnerable people.
