Nursing homes the location for electoral fraud
Federal Labor MP, Daryl Melham, has claimed that 80% of electoral fraud is due to confusion, dementia and double voting in residential facilities.
Speaking in the debate on amendments to electoral legislation in Parliament in March, which was reported by AAP, he said allegations of systemic fraud had been routinely made after every recent election.
Mr Melham said there was occasional fraud involving multiple voting.
“80% or more of it related to elderly people who were in a nursing home where confusion reigned, dementia reigned and people were double voting,” he said.
“It wasn’t fraud, it was confusion.”
In 2006, the coalition government reduced the period available for voters to enrol or change enrolment details until 8pm on the day the Federal election writes were issued.
The Gillard government is reverting to a seven-day grace period following the High Court’s 4-3 decision in a case mounted by the activist group GetUp.
