An aged care provider in the United Kingdom has been fined £5,000 for causing first degree burns to an elderly resident.
The Essex home was responsible for bathing the 72-year-old resident in water as hot as 72 degrees.
The court also ordered the provider to pay the resident £500 in compensation and bear costs of £5,989.
Two carers lowered the resident into the hot bath but were not quick enough to remove his feet as he cried in pain. He was treated in hospital overnight.
An investigation found no thermostatic mixing valve was fitted to the water supply to prevent the temperature exceeding 44 degrees.
