NSW health info sessions for seniors groups

Posted

New South Wales Seniors Peer Education Centre (NSW SPEC) provides free information talks to seniors groups and others caring for older people. They are now taking bookings.

The free service is aimed at:

  • seniors groups and clubs;
  • carer support groups for those caring for an older person;
  • volunteers in contact with seniors; older people living in independent units in retirement villages; and
  • support groups for older people caring for another (spouse, grandchild, dependant adult offspring).

Talks include:

Quality Use of Medicine; As we get older, we tend to use more medication and this can easily lead to a medication mix up. About 140,000 visits are made to hospital each year because of such incidents. Find out how to avoid a medication mix up.

Generics; Are there similarities and differences between brand and generic medicines?: Find out how to make a choice between the two.

More Than Medicines – Living Well; This talk is especially relevant to older people (and their carers) living with diabetes, hypertension or chronic pain. Find out how making some simple lifestyle changes can help improve the quality of your life, as well as by taking medication. (Groups need to have done the first 2 talks before doing this one).

Beyond Maturity Blues; Challenges the myth that depression is a normal part of getting older. Increase your awareness and understanding of this treatable illness, how to recognise its symptoms, what treatments are available and how to access treatment. We can also offer Beyond Maturity Blues to Italian seniors groups in Italian by Italian seniors. All talks are presented by a fully trained volunteer peer educator, also a senior, and are accompanied by high quality informative handouts.

NSW SPEC is funded by the National Prescribing Service for its medicines-related talks and by beyondblue, the national depression initiative for Beyond Maturity Blues.

To book a session, or to find out more, contact NSW SPEC on (02) 9286 3868 or email spec@cotansw.com.au
