NRMA welcomes fairer deal for NSW older drivers
Reforms to the licensing system for older drivers in NSW will ensure a fairer deal for over 85s, according to NRMA Motoring & Services.
NRMA director, Graham Blight, said Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal’s announcement was welcomed by the NRMA, which had campaigned strongly against a proposed 10-kilometre restriction for older drivers and the current testing regime.
“With more than 105,000 members over the age of 80, the NRMA led the charge in securing a fair deal for all older drivers in this state and our voice has been heard,” Mr Blight said.
“Never before has the NRMA experienced such a huge response to a single issue as it has about older drivers and we are extremely pleased with this outcome.”
Mr Blight said action being taken by the state government to redesign the current license test for over 85’s to make it more practical was especially welcome.
“We are also pleased to see the introduction of voluntary assessments through accredited organisations like the NRMA offering a new choice for drivers who might feel uncomfortable sitting through a formal test,” Mr Blight said.
“Other reforms include improved medical checks to pick up health issues that will affect driving ability and maintaining a system of modified licences for drivers aged over 85.
“The NRMA is very happy the government is also establishing a new Older Drivers Implementation Group and we look forward to working with the government and other stakeholders to introduce these reforms.”
Mr Blight congratulated the Roads and Traffic Authority and Roads Minister for listening to the concerns of the
community.
“Because a licence is an integral part of older drivers’ independence, particularly for those living in regional and rural NSW, these reforms strike the right balance between road safety and maintaining people’s mobility,” Mr Blight said.
“They will ensure an older driver has more options than ever before when it comes to keeping their licence.”
