National Prescribing Service reviews 3 popular medicines

The three editions of the latest National Prescribing Service (NPS) consumer resource, Medicine Update, are now available at the NPS website www.nps.org.au/consumers .

These editions review the medicines:
Alendronate(Fosamax, Fosamax Plus, Alendro) for primary prevention of osteoporosis; Fluticasone with salmeterol(Seretide) for COPD; Varenicline (Champix) for smoking cessation.

The first edition of Medicine Update reviewed lumiracoxib (Prexige) for osteoarthritis and the Theraputic Goods Administration has since withdrawn it from sale in Australia.

Medicine Update is designed to be used by consumers who are considering new medicines.

It aims to highlight important information about how the medicine is used in therapy, how it compares with other therapies, provide any important safety information and explain the conditions of its listing on the PBS.
