Nominations for the 2010, National Disability Awards are now open for individuals and organisations.

The awards, now in their fourth year, celebrate and acknowledge the contribution and achievements people with disability make to the community.

The awards also recognise individuals, organisations and businesses that have improved opportunities for people with a disability, such as greater inclusion, participation or employment.

Award nominations need to be lodged by 16 July, with recipients announced at an awards ceremony in Canberra on 23 November.

Award categories:

  • Minister’s Lifelong Achievement Award for people over 25 years who have advanced the rights of people with disability
  • Young Disability Challenge Award for young people 12 to 25 years who have advanced the rights of people with a disability
  • Business Awards for large and small businesses which have improved opportunities for people with a disability, such as greater inclusion, participation and employment
  • Local Government Award for councils which have implemented substantial changes to improve physical, social, economic and cultural access and inclusion for people with disability and their families
  • Social Inclusion Awards for schools and community groups which have actively built in inclusion and full participation of people with disability alongside other students or members of community groups
  • Accessible Housing Award for property developers, builders and others in the building sector that have developed innovative and accessible private dwellings for people with a disability.

Last year’s awardees included a parent who became involved in community awareness of disability, a person with disability, a pro-active young leader, an advocate who designed a single access point for employers hiring people with a disability, a council worker who designed a Local Government Disability Action Plan, and a person promoting community awareness of amputees.

Nominations can be made at http://www.idpwd.com.au or by calling 1800 440 385.
