Nominations open for 2007 Melbourne awards
Melbourne Lord Mayor, John So, has called for all Melburnians to speak up and nominate a company, individual or community organisation they believe deserves recognition in the 2007 Melbourne Awards.
“The Melbourne Awards have a strong emphasis on highlighting the efforts of the ‘quiet-achievers’ in the community. They focus on recognising the hard work and talents of inspirational people who wouldn’t usually receive recognition or seek the limelight,” the Lord Mayor said.
“You don’t have to be famous to be nominated or to win. Past winners have included a young environmental campaigner, a small iconic candy store and a group of African women cooking traditional cuisine for their community.
2006 Melburnian of the Year, Ron Barassi, said it is important to celebrate the efforts of the unsung heroes of our community.
“Melbourne is the best city to live in, and it’s time for the city and its citizens to acknowledge the inspirational people and organisations who are striving to make Melbourne a better place to live, work and visit, and support those who are disadvantaged or in need,” Mr Barassi said.
The awards identify and celebrate those who have made significant contributions to Melbourne in the areas of: profile; the community; and the environment.
For each of the three categories, there will be three separate awards presented for: individuals (ie volunteers); corporations; and community/not-for-profit organisations.
Nominations close on 18 May 2007.
The Melbourne Awards will be held on Melbourne Day, Thursday 30 August.
