Nine golden rules for a long life

A Sanitarium Health and Wellbeing survey of 1,200 Australians has found that despite one in three wanting to live to 100, 53% are overweight or obese, 40% don’t eat the recommended levels of fruit and vegetables, 23% are couch potatoes, and 19% never have strong exercise.

A team of researchers and scientists found that there are nine common lifestyle similarities in areas in the world, such as Sardinia in Italy and Okinawa in Japan, where the residents reach 100 at a rate 10 times higher than others living in the developed world.

They identified nine successful lifestyles which help people live until 100. They are:

  • 1 move naturally through finding ways to make being active unavoidable
  • 2 know your purpose in life and be able to articulate it
  • 3 down shift and work less, rest and take holidays
  • 4 stop eating when feeling 80% full
  • 5 eat more vegetables and less protein and processed foods
  • 6 drink two glasses of red wine daily
  • 7 belong to a healthy social group and connect with the right people
  • 8 reconnect with one’s spiritual beliefs
  • 9 make family the priority
