New York plants can call for water

New York University students have developed moisture sensors in the soil so that plants can apparently send signals over a wireless network to transmit calls for water.

The Botanicalls project helpline has recorded voices matching the biological characteristics of each plant to give plants personality.

Interactive communications student Rebecca Bray said, “We wanted to make sure that you were not just getting needy calls. So we have them calling you back when you have watered them to say ‘Thank you’

We wanted to provide a system so the plants can actually survive by communicating with people”.

Ms Bray said she hoped the system would become available commercially later this year but said she also hoped the system “will help people learn how to take better care of their plants and maybe not even have to need the calls after a while”.
