New SA health campus to attract medicos
A new rural health campus involving teaching, research and administration in the grounds of Port Lincoln Public Hospital in South Australia is expected to attract medical students, doctors, and other health professionals to the area.
The Spencer Gulf Rural Health School is a joint venture between the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia, and includes a Rural Clinical School as well as a University Department of Rural Health and other support for rural health.
The Australian Government provided $1.3 million in capital funding for the Port Lincoln campus through its $830 million Rural Health Strategy.
The Government also committed $21 million in recurrent funding to the University of Adelaide for the operation of the Rural Clinical School from June 2001 until June 2008.
The Port Lincoln campus will primarily operate as a Rural Clinical School for medical undergraduates but will also be used by other students.
