New knee for women breakthrough
A new specially built knee implant for women has now been developed in Australia which can replace the basic one-size-fits all treatment which operates at present.
Queensland orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Chris Vertullo, said that a woman’s knee was not just a smaller version of a man’s knee but that there were three distinct differences. There was a narrower shape, a thinner shape, and a different patella tracking angle.
DrVertullo said research had shown that Australian women were more than twice as likely as men to need total knee replacement but were three times more likely not to have the surgery required.
Now the improvements in knee implant manufacture and knee replacement surgery is expected to encourage more women to benefit from knee surgery. Further information about the Gender Solutions knee for women should be available from GPs.
